Visit Indonesia and discover Raja Ampat, birdwatcher´s Paradise

As you may know, Raja Ampat is an archipelago of Indonesia, recognized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as one of the 17 megadiverse countries in the world. And this is not only applicable to its marine biodiversity, but to the whole of its fauna and flora. Not only its seabed is home to nature’s treasures; its sky also offers us the privilege of watching some of the most beautiful and exotic birds in the world

Did you pack the binoculars? Here we go. What are some of the species you’ll see at Raja Ampat during your next visit to Indonesia?

Red Bird of Paradise

Or Pardisaea Rubra. The biggest attraction for birdwatching in Raja Ampat. Native bird of Indonesia, this is the only place in the world where you can enjoy the colorful and beauty of this exotic bird. Crimson-coppered with a yellow or green head according to its genus, the red bird of paradise performs, like other exotic tropical birds, a complex ritual of courtship and mating. In several places in the area it is possible to book specialized excursions with local guides, which will make your experience in the forests of Raja Ampat much more rewarding than you expected. Here is a link to more information about some of the tours.

Wilson’s Bird of Paradise

Or Cicinnurus Respublica.  Another beauty of this archipelago. In addition to its wonderful colors, it has a twisted tail like a mustache that shyly reminds us of the bold aesthetics of Dalí himself. Like the previous one, the Raja Ampat archipelago, where specific excursions are also organized for the observation of this bird, is one of the very few places in the world where you can enjoy the magnificent beauty of this animal paradise.

What about the camera? You didn’t forget your camera, did you? That these wonders will only be enjoyed here, during your visit to Indonesia birdwatcher´s paradise Raja Ampat . We go on:

Papuan Hanging Parrot

Or Loriculus Aurantiifrons. With green and red fur and an orange front, is one of the typical birds of the area. The Papuan loricon is a somewhat difficult species to detect, usually not very visible, because it remains in jungle areas at altitudes above a thousand meters. However, in Raja Ampat it is not uncommon to see this exotic and unique bird. The best time is when they nest, between July and October

Collared Kingfisher

Or Todiramphus Chloris: This bird is much more widespread than the previous ones. However, it has more than 50 subspecies spread from the Red Sea to French Polynesia. With green and blue tones, small size but big beak, its simplicity wastes beauty.

And many, many more, of incalculable and majestic beauty and unquestionable ecological interest, such as the Matsudaira Storm-petrel, the Pomarinus Skua, the Small Rabihorcado, the Shadow Tern, the Embraced Tern, the Brown Noddy, the Little Tern, (phew, I’m running out of film!), the Sumatran Tern, the Bengali Tern, and an endless number of up to more than 160 species. Don’t hesitate to get more information here.

By the way, not long ago a news item was published from Europa Press confirming that a team from Trinity College had discovered and catalogued two new bird species in Indonesia: the Wakatobi White-eye and the Wangi-Wangi White-eye.  We refer you to the publication we refer to and the Trinity article itself, in case you wish more detailed information.

Wouldn’t you like to visit Indonesia birdwatcher´s paradise and discover all this diversity? Or maybe even a new species? Who knows? Raja Ampat is rich in its enormous biodiversity, both in the sea and on land and, of course, in the sky. Come and discover it.
