Another Step in our Sustainable Path

Our Intention as divers and nature lovers, is a resort that practices environmentally sustainable eco-tourism in the hope of managing natural resources, to help improve the lives of the surrounding community as well as maintaining the quality of the environment around our area.
At Biodiversity Nature, we have implemented a long-term sustainability management system that is suitable to our size and scope, and we have tried to addresses environmental, social, cultural, economic, quality, human rights, health, safety, management issues and drives continuous improvement.
Thanks to our guests, which visit us, we can do another of our health project, This time, in Yenbeser Village.

Biodiversity Nature Resort – Health Projects

Despite the unfavorable weather, the fourth Health Project in Yenbeser ran smoothly. Each initiative teaches us something new, and this one was no different. Thanks to the efforts of the local community, volunteers, and medical professionals, we were able to provide essential health services in an area where access is limited.

1. 1st Health Project – June 2023 – Yenbeser: 187 patients

2. 2nd Health Project – May 2024 – Friwen : 210 patients

3. 3rd Health Project – July 2024 – Wawiyai : 195 patients

4. 4th Health Project – June 2025 – Yenbeser : 230 patient

In his remarks, Yenbeser village Chief expressed his gratitude to Biodiversity for its continuous care and attention to the community in Yenbeser, and also thanked RSAL (Sorong Navy Hospital) for coming to provide medical check-ups for the villagers. Yenbeser village Chief was neatly dressed in his official uniform, and when the RSAL team arrived, he personally welcomed them at the jetty and accompanied them through half of the event.

The community was very enthusiastic — so much so that the doctors couldn’t take turns for lunch because the line of patients never stopped. People were really eager to get their health checked. Many elderly and children came as well, and they were all happy. The doctors were especially appreciated for being so friendly, pleasant, and patient in serving everyone.

The community in Yenbeser really needs medical care, and regular activities like this are a great help to them. After evaluating the situation, our team believes it’s important to involve the team from Puskesmas Saonek, as referrals can be handled more quickly and efficiently that way.

Biodiversity Team, actively supports initiatives from local village for local infrastructure and social community development. Examples of initiatives include education, training, health and sanitation and projects which address the impacts of climate change.

Advances in eye care

A highlight of this edition was the presence of an ophthalmologist, who conducted basic eye exams and screened patients for cataracts. During a brief conversation, the doctor expressed interest in organizing cataract surgeries specifically for the nearby communities. He even mentioned having a network of fellow ophthalmologists willing to support this initiative, though further discussions are needed to make this a reality.

Local team development

Throughout the event, we also identified opportunities to better empower our local team. Biodiversity Staff Andre, showed great initiative and asked insightful questions—qualities that suggest he is ready for greater responsibility.

Biodiversity Staff are engaged with development and implementation of the sustainability management system and receive periodic guidance and training regarding their roles and responsibilities in its delivery.

Project frequency going forward

As for project frequency, we are likely to hold only one Health Project this year, compared to two in previous years. While we would love to do more, the logistics, planning, and resources involved make a single well-executed edition the most feasible option for now.

Following UNWTO standards, Sustainable Tourism definition is all “Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impact. Addressing the need of the visitor, the industry, the environmental and the host community”. And that is what we intend to do at Raja Ampat Biodiversity Nature Resort.

Special thanks

We’d like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mama Makusi, who kindly offered her home for storing supplies, preparing meals, hosting the team, sheltering us from the rain, and cooking snacks. Her house, along with Ros Makusi’s, also served as the space for eye and ENT clinics—though heavy rain did cause quite a mess. We suggest offering them a small financial token of appreciation for their generous support.
We also wish to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Zeth Dimara, whose coordination and leadership were instrumental to the success of this project. Zeth organized the dancers, coordinated the event, acted as MC, and embraced numerous roles with enthusiasm and dedication. His tireless involvement and commitment were key to making this project a success.

The organization has implemented a long-term sustainability management system that is suitable to its size and scope, addresses environmental, social, cultural, economic, quality, human rights, health…
